Understanding Primordial Germ Cell Development

Our research focuses on understanding the development of mammalian primordial germ cells (PGCs). PGCs are the cells in the embryo that eventually give rise to sperm or egg. Accordingly, PGCs represent the only cell type responsible for the perpetuation of hereditary information across generations. After fertilisation of the egg, the resulting embryo starts to divide and shortly after implants into the uterus of the mother. During or after implantation, a few cells are set aside to become PGCs, which then activate a specific set of genes and modulate chemical modifications present on DNA. Our work addresses the fundamental questions: How are these molecular changes achieved and why are these required to form sperm and egg?
